Pre Season Happenings and Comments
On September 15th the Women’s Olympic Team start= ed their Quest Tour 2009-10 with a game against the WCHA all star team. = The game was a great event for women and girls hockey in Minnesota and ac= ross the nation. There was a terrific crowd to cheer both teams on and adm= ire the great skills on ice. USA Hockey Board Chairman and long ago Minne= sota Hockey founding father Walter Bush celebrated his 80th birthday at the game. Dave Ogrean, USA Hockey Executive Director and other USA Hockey officials were in attendance. Good luck to the USA Hockey Olympic Wom= en with their quest for Gold!

On September 14th at the Wild game versus St. Louis Minnesota Hockey, the Minnesota Wild and partner Treasure Island Reso= rt and Casino hosted the “Special Hockey” and “Disabled Hockey” program at the Excel Center during the Wild pre season = game with St. Louis. Between period action showcased the great skills of t= hese terrific youngsters and disabled adults. Kudos go out to Toni Boelter= for her vision and energy to make this event happen. This is a growing pa= rt of our hockey community and we are all very excited to see more young people enjoy the game. A coach development program is being scheduled= to assist these players develop skills and enjoy the game.

There is barely other video coaching of such high quality on the internet.
Are you planning to do more of that?

Calgary Flames Training Camp Quote Sept 9 2009

As the season begins it is important to think about the desired outcome for each player. One of the striking differences betw= een Minnesota and many other parts of the country is that we seem to be focused on winning the state tournament at all levels from high school down to pee wees whereas many of the other top programs outside of Minnesota are focused on developing players and preparing them to com= pete at the next level. They measure their success by how many players they move on to the next level, not by which tournaments they win. A diffe= rent view for sure. As a result more and more players from non traditional hockey areas are reaching elite level status by focusing on developme= nt. The new ADM outlined by USA Hockey is focused on development rather t= han winning and is in line with this other approach. Since the number of opportunities in college is static or even dropping, when players from non traditional areas of the country reach Division 1 levels it is a = loss for a player in the more traditional areas like Minnesota. This is something to think about.

Used Hockey Equipment Giveaway Day, Saturday, October = 10 at the Xcel Energy Center

As a culmination of a three week effort by Minnesota Hockey and other partners to collected used hockey equipment from throughout the area, has resulted in a large assortment of skates, protective, goaltender gear, sticks and helmets. The drive is designe= d to help kids stay in hockey or begin to play for the first time. The giveaway of the gear will be held on Saturday, October 10 from 10:00 = am - 2:00 pm inside gate 1 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. This wil= l be first come, first served - for all individuals, families and associat= ions who are in need of hockey equipment. Questions can be directed to letsplay@letsplayhockey.c= om.

The articles this issue are spot on for early season. =

“Practice Makes= Better- Games are for Fun” is an important message for coach= es and parents alike. Parents need to be knowledgeable and be involved. = “Handling Power= ” is an interesting take on leadership and should be applied to coachin= g. Another interesting concept that has started to take hold is off-ice training during the season. I understand that in Apple Valley the you= th teams will be getting one session a week at their new off ice facilit= y in place of one on ice session. I know a couple high school teams that a= re working out off ice three times a week in addition to their on ice practices. This is in line with a development model more than a “win at all costs model”. Former Gopher, Brett Strot shar= es his “In Season Off = Ice Training Program” with us. The last article deals wi= th coaching girls. The girls programs are growing in Minnesota and coach= es need to know the differences between coaching girls versus boys. The = article is called “Observations o= n Female Motivation”. The final article of this issue by Dr. = Paul Stricker address the developmental stages children age 6-9 go through= as it relates to hockey and sport development. This is a must read for parents and coaches of mites. This article is the third in his series= "The Arena of Sp= ort Development”. Thanks to Paul for contributing these articles.

Youth hockey is a huge personal commitment on the part= of players, families, administrators, and board members at the local, district and state levels. As adults we do it for the kids. Let’= ;s all remember that this is just a game played by kids and the outcomes really do not matter in the big picture.
