scrolling down the page to the signup box on the right-hand side. A recent study done by Ohio State University on 218
student athletes examined the impact of Facebook usage on grades and
average study time. Their findings: Daily Facebook users had an avera=
ge
GPA of 3.2 and studied an average of 2.5 hours per week. Students who=
did
not use Facebook had an average GPA of 3.7 and studied an average of =
10
hours per week or more. The conclusion is obvious: Students who spend
more time on Facebook would be better served if they used their time =
to
study and work out than spending time social networking. The downside=
of
social networking is that rumors are rampant and the constant
bombardments of messages (same as on iphones and texting services) is
very distracting and make concentration difficult. Solution: Limit us=
e of
Facebook and text devices to times other than when studying or when
reading is expected to occur. The USA Hockey website and the Minnesota Hockey websit=
es
have a wealth of information on them for coaches, parents and players.
For coaches there are over 200 articles and ten short skills videos on
the Minnesota Hockey site in the Coach section. On the USA Hockey web=
site
there are featured skills videos and practice ideas. Add to that the
comprehensive Skills and Drills DVD and the Off-Ice training DVDs from
USA Hockey and it adds up to plenty of resource material for coaches =
of
all ages and experience. The key is to spend some time at these sites
getting ideas and concepts for your team. The American Development Model released by USA Hockey
early this past year is designed to be a set of tools and guidelines =
for
the development of hockey players 18 and under. The recommendations c=
ome
from a wide range of worldwide experts in hockey, other sports
federations and child development professionals. The idea is to allow
younger players to develop along their natural development path and a=
void
burnout by providing age appropriate training, practicing and competi=
tion
levels. A secondary goal is to reduce the high financial costs and ti=
me
commitments for families with kids playing the game. The science and
methodology is well tested over the last thirty years in many other
countries and sports. You can learn more about the ADM program at www.admkids.com . Coaching is critical to the development of all players.
Most youth coaches are learning as they go and frankly it takes years=
of
experience to coach successfully. To increase your impact on players
please spend some time reviewing and trying the ideas and concepts fo=
und
in the resource materials on the above referenced websites. Do not be
afraid to ask for help. I have several qualified individuals who woul=

coaches who were wiped out from behind by skaters during tryouts. Both
told me that they fell backwards and landed on their heads. They were
ever so thankful for the fact they had on their helmets. Both felt ve=

fortunate not to have suffered serious injury. Having a prepared plan before you go to practice is mu=

for all coaches. Your best source of practice plans is available at www.flexxcoach.com. There are =

plans available or you can build your own. The site allows you to ema=

the plan to your team if you wish. Many youth associations will pay f=

your annual subscription. With the season getting underway the articles are all

I witnessed an incident at the Super Rink in mid-October I would like=
to
share with you. A bantam practice was going on and one of the parent
coaches was scrimmaging with the kids. He collided with the goaltender
who had skated out to play a puck. Both coach and player crashed to t=
he
ice. The player was ok and got up quickly. Not so the coach. He lay on
the ice for a couple minutes and was finally helped up by a fellow co=
ach.
As he got up he had to retrieve his helmet which flew off during the
collision before he and his head hit the ice. He put it back on but d=
id
not fasten the chin strap. The helmet will not work if it comes off w=
hen
you need it. Please fasten the chin strap as the rule requires. If for
not other reason than to protect your family from a serious loss (you)
